    LibreSync 0.5.0 Pre-release

LibrePortal released this 2026-10-17 16:57:04 +01:00 | 33 commits to main since this release

Syncs the moment files change, tells you about sync problems, and can remove songs deleted on the server

LibreSync 0.5.0 syncs the moment something changes on your LibrePortal, tells you when files couldn't sync, and can keep your phone's music tidy.

    Instant sync

    • When a shared folder changes on your LibrePortal (a music app adds songs, or someone uploads), your phone syncs that folder within seconds instead of waiting for its next check.
    • It uses ntfy, the app that already brings your server's notifications for chat apps. If ntfy isn't on your phone yet, LibreSync shows a short card: install ntfy and set its server to your LibrePortal's address.
    • On unless you turn it off: Settings, When to sync, Instant sync. The chip says how it stands, like "Instant sync · on".
    • Wi-Fi only and Only while charging still apply. While instant sync works, the regular check becomes a safety net every 6 hours, unless you chose your own.
    • Needs LibrePortal 0.10.6 or newer. With an older one, nothing changes.

    Notifications

    • "3 files couldn't sync" when a sync ends with problems, once per problem. Tap it to see which files and why. It goes away when the folder comes right.
    • Optional, and off unless you turn it on (Settings, Notifications, New files): a quiet note like "12 new songs on this phone".

Remove songs deleted on the server (optional)

    • Turn it on per folder: a song deleted on the server goes from your phone too. "What we found" asks for new shared music and video folders (on for music). Existing folders stay as they were; each folder's details has the switch.
    • Only files LibreSync itself brought to your phone, unchanged since. A file you changed here is kept ("Kept: changed on this phone"); files you made on the phone are never touched.
    • A file goes only once it has been gone from the server for a while (an hour and two checks, or a day), so a server hiccup or a rename never removes anything. A renamed song arrives under its new name first.
    • If many go at once, LibreSync asks first: "47 songs were removed on the server. Remove them here too?"

Nothing is ever deleted on your server.

Big downloads finish with all files access, connecting shows each step, and one short line per folder

LibreSync 0.4.1 fixes a sync problem and makes connecting easier to follow.

Fixed: files that would not save

    • With all files access, a big file could stop part-way with "write failed: EBADF". It now finishes. Files that stopped before carry on where they were.
    • A folder no longer stays on "Checking for changes…" after a sync that never ran.
    • If many new files appear in a both-ways folder at once, LibreSync now holds them back and asks before sending them to the server. Its own half-downloaded files were never sent.

    Connecting, step by step

    • After signing in or entering a pairing code, you see each step tick off: found your LibrePortal, signed in or code accepted, this phone's own key, your folders, ready.
    • If the server is busy, a calm line says so. If a step fails, it turns red, says why in plain words, and offers Try again.
    • Home, What we found and Folders show the shape of what's coming while they load.

    One short line per folder

    • Each folder says one short thing, like "Up to date · 2 min ago" or "1 file couldn't sync". Tap it for the details: what came and went, and each problem in plain words.
    • Notices and Settings rows fit on one line on small phones and with larger text.

    Choose how often to check

    • Settings has "Check for changes": every 15 or 30 minutes, every hour (now the usual), every 3 or 6 hours, once a day, or only when you tap Sync. It shows roughly when the next check is. Android may check a little later to save battery.

No second copy of a server

    • Opening LibreSync from another app for a server it already has goes straight to that server on Home. A pairing code for it asks first, and the default is No.
    • LibreSync never adds the same server twice.

Nothing is ever deleted on your server.

Everything in one LibreSync folder, a Permissions step, sync all or choose, and shared folders listed once

LibreSync 0.4.0 tidies where your files go on the phone and how you choose them.

    One LibreSync folder

    • Everything LibreSync brings to your phone now lives in one folder, by server: LibreSync/LibrePortal//SharedMusic, LibreSync/Nextcloud//Documents, and so on. Nothing from two servers can mix.
    • Every music, video and photo app still finds the files.
    • Your files from 0.3 are moved there by themselves, once. Nothing comes down again and nothing is deleted. Home tells you when it is done.
    • This needs "All files access". Without it, nothing breaks: the same folders go inside Music, Movies, Pictures and Documents instead, and move over by themselves if you allow it later. If you take it away again, they move back and syncing carries on.
    • Empty folders left at the old places are tidied away. A folder with anything in it is never touched.
    • Photo upload still reads from your camera, as before.

    Permissions, in one place

    • After signing in, one short screen shows what LibreSync needs and why: all files access, notifications, battery, and your photos when photo upload is on. Allow each, or skip the optional ones.
    • Settings has a Permissions card with the same switches.

    Sync all, or choose

    • Each server now starts with "Sync all folders". Turn it on to sync everything, with a folded list of what that means, and folders added later come along too. Turn it off to choose folder by folder.
    • Your LibrePortal's shared folders start with everything on. Nextcloud and ownCloud start with nothing on, and show how much would come down, and whether it fits, before syncing all.

    Where on this phone

    • Each folder's details, and "What we found", now have "Where on this phone": LibreSync's own folder, or any folder you pick. Files already there can move along. Two folders can't share one place.

    Shared folders listed once

    • A Nextcloud or ownCloud on your LibrePortal no longer lists SharedMusic, SharedPhotos and SharedVideo a second time. One line says they come from LibrePortal.
    • If both copies were already syncing, the second copy is paused, and Home offers once to remove it. Removing it only stops syncing; no file is deleted.

    A calmer look

    • Buttons look like buttons: pills with icons, the main one filled, Disconnect and Sign out in red.
    • Each folder's status sits in its own strip with its Sync button, and servers show their person, padlock and address as small chips.
    • The last folder on Home scrolls clear of the Sync now bar.

Nothing is ever deleted on your server.

Big videos carry on where they stopped, Nextcloud signs in with LibrePortal, and plain http always asks first

LibreSync 0.3.0 is about big files and private connections.

    Big files

    • A film coming down, or a long camera video going up, no longer starts again when the Wi-Fi drops, the phone stops the sync or restarts: it carries on from where it was.
    • Nobody sees half a file meanwhile. A download waits hidden until it is whole; on Nextcloud and ownCloud a big upload goes up in parts and is put together at the end; in a LibrePortal shared folder you may change, it goes up under a hidden name and is put in place once it is all there.
    • Big files go straight to the phone's storage, never through its memory, and Home shows how far a big file has got.

    Nextcloud signs in with LibrePortal

    • On a Nextcloud that uses LibrePortal's sign-in, LibreSync now says so: sign in with LibrePortal in your browser, allow LibreSync, done. Nextcloud gives LibreSync a password of its own, which you can see and remove in Nextcloud's Devices & sessions. Settings shows "Signed in with LibrePortal, through Nextcloud".

    Private connections

    • A padlock shows wherever a server is named: https, or your LibrePortal's VPN, counts as private.
    • LibreSync picks a private address by itself whenever one answers, and only falls back to plain http when nothing private does.
    • Before anything is synced over plain http, with any server (LibrePortal, ownCloud or Nextcloud), LibreSync asks you to switch on "I understand". You can change it in Settings.

    Smaller things

    • An update card that stopped short (a refused download, "Allow from this source" turned down, or Android's installer closed) starts afresh after the next check, including the background one.
    • Each new version installs over the last as an update.

Nothing is ever deleted on your server.
